Besides Budapest and Balaton the Danube Bend is one of the most beautiful destinations in Hungary. If you ride along the Danube Bend make sure to visit the picturesque towns Esztergom, Visegrad and Szentendre which are located very close to each other. When seeing the small side streets, colorful houses and castles offering amazing views, you might consider staying a bit longer.
During our bike tour we sometimes meet people who speak English or even German and tell us their stories, who give tips or just chatting a bit. As we do with Andrea who is working in a bar. Thanks to her we got informed about the open-air museum in Skanzen which shows the agricultural life in Hungary during the past centuries. On the next day we are cycling there at 36 degrees and a gradient of 9 % – we are not disappointed at all. After a few hours we proceed to Budapest and downhill I reach my new top speed: 51 km/h.
Budapest
It is early evening and still more than 30 degrees. Coming from north we are arriving in Budapest and decide to relax for a while in a deckchair at one of the many small beach bars along the Danube and Danube cycle path EuroVelo6: Sunglasses on, enjoying a cocktail and listening to sounds of Café del Mar. First impression: Awesome!
We continue heading into town to Tine and Bruno, friends of Babs, with whom we are going to stay for a few days. Finally it is time for some recovery. At this heat we rather stay inside. Normally, we cannot choose as we are forced to stay outside when we are travelling by bike. Thus, we are enjoying the fact that we do not have to bike all the time for the next days. On Saturday night the four of us are going to the new Nite Club Akvárium to watch the Champions League Final. A great evening and an awesome night life in Budapest, especially in district 5 and 7.
By chance we are in Budapest on the weekend where the Belvarosi Fesztival takes place and are listening to some national and international artists before the next highlight is already waiting for us: The 360 Rooftop Bar – Budapest´s No. 1 address for delicious food, good drinks and a 360 degrees panorama view over Budapest – Day Club atmosphere and an amazing sunset inclusive.
We are spending our last day on the west bank of the Margaret Island in the Palatinus, a thermal open-air swimming bath with different pools and crazy action-slides. We would have never guessed that bathtub-warm water would be that relaxing even at more than 30 degrees outside. Suddenly, an enormous thunderstorm with hail is coming over us – an impressive nature spectacle and spectacular even if a bit uncomfortable ending.
